Matthew 18:20 reads, “For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them”. Over the last four years, Cross Upper School students have gathered in Greenville, SC for the annual retreat. The trip started with a small group of 40 students in 2022 and has grown to 100 participants in 2025 and is definitely now one of the most anticipated and impactful trips that students look forward to. Students traveled to Look Up Lodge Christian Camp for a three day retreat filled with community building, deepening of faith and an excellent start to the school year filled with good intentions.

From the moment students stepped off the bus, lasting bonds were forged. Starting with colorful grade-level flags, team clothing, and competitive spirit, students dove headfirst into team challenges, ranging from relay races and water slide kickball to lip sync battles and comical skits performed by both teachers and the incredible staff who joined in the fun. This year’s friendly competitions ended with a win for the juniors but the real win was the sense of Christ-centered community formed in the upper school.

“We’ve seen so much growth, not just in numbers, but in spirit,” states Mrs. Leslie Albert, director of Faith Formation. “This retreat truly reflects how far we’ve come, from small, quiet beginnings to a bright school community rooted in faith, friendship and purpose.”
Every day was planned with fun outdoor activities like ziplining, lake swimming, basketball, water slides and evenings featuring a glow in the dark dance party. These experiences allowed the students a break from their classroom and a chance to challenge themselves with new adventures.
Worship flowed through every part of the retreat, anchoring each day in faith and reflection, from the first evening to the final send off. The group gathered around the campfire on the last night and worshiped the Lord in His beautiful creation; the mountains. Students shared their personal testimonies, and created handmade bracelets for the Cross Schools mission team. More than a string of beads, the bracelets serve as a symbol of inspiration and encouragement for recipients around the world, each carrying a special prayer.
This trip did not just impact the students. All who took part came back with stronger bonds, open hearts and renewed enthusiasm to tackle the great year ahead.
