Cross Talk reached out to Alex Homann, Class of 24 for advice for Cross’ third senior graduating class as they prepare to go off to college. Alex is completing her sophomore year at George Washington University in DC.
- Talk to everyone you meet like you want to get to know them. Try to be as extroverted as possible, even if it doesn’t feel natural to you. Everyone is looking for friends, especially in the beginning. You’ll end up gaining a network of really cool and different people that way or just having a bunch of great conversations.
- Go into your classes genuinely wanting to learn and become knowledgeable about the content. Classes are so much more than a path to a degree.
- Do all of the activities that sound interesting to you! Don’t force yourself to do it if you have no interest and it just sounds good for a resume. Once you pursue things you’re actually interested in you will naturally have success and find people with other common interests. Never be nervous to try something out!
- …But also don’t overload yourself. Rest and downtime are so important in order to not burn out. You don’t want to be go-go-go all the time until you crash.
- Lastly, have fun! I always thought people were exaggerating when they said how quickly it goes by but it really does. Make sure to enjoy yourself as much as you can, and if you’re not, it’s okay to make changes to things that feel permanent.
