Thirty-one upper school Cross students attended the annual Youth In Government conference in Columbia, a four-day event where students from across the state learned how the government works by writing and debating their own bills. Youth In Government is a program that lets students take part in a realistic model of the state legislature, giving them a chance to see how laws are made from start to finish.
During the conference, Cross students worked in committees, presented their ideas, and voted on bills just like real lawmakers. Eight Cross bills were officially signed by the YIG Governor, which was a major accomplishment for the group. Students also earned two Outstanding Bill Awards and one Outstanding Statesman Award, making this one of the most successful years for the school.
There were also several fun activities during the trip. The mandatory fun night included both the auction and karaoke, and students could choose which one to attend. In the auction, students could sign up to be “auctioned off”, and others used auction money to win a fun night with the person they bid on. The night before the last day, the group attended a gala with games, music, art displays, a dance, and even a talent show.
Overall, the trip was a mix of learning and fun, and students came back with new memories and experiences they were proud of.
